The router is a wireless router device to perform a function, the function further comprising a wireless access point. It is typically used to provide Internet [Note 1] or computer network. It does not require a wired link as the connection is made wirelessly, via radio waves. It can be a wired LAN (local area network) function, a dedicated wireless LAN (WLAN), or a mixed wired / wireless networks, depending on manufacturer and model. 
Most current wireless routers have the following characteristics: 
One or more network cards support Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet integrated into the main system chip
